A film by Raul Ruiz based on the feuilleton by Camilo Castelo Branco, a portrait of the portuguese nineteenth century.
Our story begins with the young Pedro da Silva, he has no father and no mother, throughout the film his life will reveal. the closely guarded secret of his existence, he’s the fruit of a forbidden passion. The wonderful plot of the romantic novelist Camilo Castelo Branco, unlike many adaptations to the big screen, is not neutered in the film's director, Raul Ruiz. As like all great novels it tales the story of a forbidden love and cursed, sealed with blood sweat and tears. However, the film has something very personal, the inner look of the chilean director who guides us through a country dominated by social conventions and the Catholic Church.
This is not a historical film. The whole maelstrom of emotion, passion and love, hate and death, of adventure and misadventure, are universal and inherent to human beings. Who has not dared to love? Who did not suffer for love?
Much of his movies is due to the wonderful work of actors in "Mysteries of Lisbon" therefore is not a film to miss. The city is also the protagonist of Raul Ruiz scenic work, we see images of an architectural concept of Lisbon dominated by the Marquis of Pombal. There was also a careful characterization of the characters that are part of the plot of this movie.
The work of the actress Maria Joao Bastos is praised. She is Angela Lima, one of the key characters in this Portuguese movie, who lives a forbidden passion that generates a child. Adrianao Luz as Father Adriano Diniz does a remarkable job, there’s a dept in the this parish priest, this is character full of mystery and intimidating with his black gown. Have a nice time.
