Gemeniano Cruz is a young graphic designer, freelancer, which is inspired by the inexplicable to illustrate the world around him. He also undertakes artistic movements in Sesimbra, in order to beautify his homeland.

How do you imagine an illustration, regardless of the medium, how does it all work?
Gemeniano Cruz: It starts in my roots in the place where I live, I was raise by the sea, it is an area dedicated to fishing, where you can practiced surfing and skateboarding and this is my daily experience that allows me to create. For my processes I will take ideas, start by sketching and illustration appears. It also depends on whether it is for an commission, or is an author work.

You have a very expressive color palette. This is also important when ilustrate a work?
GC: Yes, by chance I love working in black and white and I do not know why. Is not my beach sort of speak, is a necessity, it is what comes out of me. But art is almost inexplicable. At the level of colors, depends on whether it is for a client, the kind of feeling we want to convey, has to do with the theme.

Are there more dificult themes than others?
GC: There are more dificult customers than themes.

Where is the challenge?
GC: The challenge is to please the person who makes us an order. He has an idea, it may even give us some tips for illustration and our style may not fit with what they have in mind. In the process is more difficult, there is a certain metamorphosis and we have to be more commercial. Basically when I do an author drawing if the viewer likes it this is half of the battle, because it appreciates, acquires and speak of our work.

You are also recognized by the works of urban art. What are the challenges of this type of environment? Whether a wall or other surface?
GC: The biggest challenge is to paint a wall on a large scale. It is the most difficult. Although, I do not use a projector, I am seriously thinking of buying one for the art works is more convenient and faster. The human anatomy is already difficult to draw on a small scale, in a large one is much more.

And people how they perceive your work as an urban artist?
GC: It is so, I do not consider myself urban artist to a 100%, because I'm an illustrator and broadcast my drawing to the wall, in a larger format. Although it works on the street, I do not consider myself this artist genre.

And there is a positive feedback or not?
GC: Yes, so I hear, the level of criticism is fine. And what I like to hear more, and that's what makes me live from the arts, is heard them recognize a work as my, they know what my style is.

Then tell me about your style.
GC: My style is what I transmit graphically. I like realism, but also suffer from the cartoon and comic book influences. It's a mix, my trace is recognized.

There is an urban art movement in the area where you reside.
GC: Yes, I am even one of the drivers. I began to illustrate walls, organized several events and made a proposal to the local chamber. I started with my murals and invited other artists to participate. It is a small village we go slowly.

So is similar to the movement of the "open doors" of Madeira?
GC: The doors are not my idea. One of those city hall responsible was on holiday in the island, saw the idea and wanted to transpose it. What I did was to paint murals, street art. We do have old parts similar to Funchal and we are now enjoy these areas, there is a reconstruction and recharacterization of some buildings.

What is your next step?
GC: I'm always doing work. I keep up. I have a project with a colleague of mine, to do illustrations for magazines, flyers, design and am I exploring the area of tattoos. Do a little of everything, because the landscape is to complicate and we cannot stop messing us.
