Hopelessly florbela

Written by

It is a biography of one of the greatest poets of our national literature.

Vicente Alves do Ó tried and succeeded in creating a poem made of unforgettable images on one of poets most beloved by the romantic Portuguese. It is one of the most watched domestic films in 2012 and rightly so, because there was a care in translating to the screen the passionate life and somewhat misunderstood of Florbela Espanca, the poet, the rebel and sensitive soul, the eternal dissatisfied and at the same time the starved for life. It is a visual treat for the viewers who do not know her work, but above all it is an excellent vehicle to discover the woman behind writing, to make known the reality of her existence and above all, is an excellent composition work of the actress Dalila Carmo, who managed to embody her fascinating personality. Another of the strengths of this production is the luxurious wardrobe, and may seem frivolous, but helps building up a particular historical period and to uncover the social status of the characters. The film does not address itself to her literary work, but it is implicit, some of the images of this film immediately forwarded me to some of her poems and also to her prose, particularly the devastating suffering after her brother's death. All words she perpetuated on paper make much sense after seeing this feature aesthetically impeccable and I like to think that the director took this entire linguistic universe into consideration when he wrote the script. She was actually greater than her own time, if she otherwise had a more plain life and complacent with her own reality, she probably would never have been the so hopelessly Florbela Espanca that we learn to love. Good movie!
