The inevitables

The Silly Season is a platform of five young artists presenting postmodern contemporary theater shows. An artistic philosophy reflected in their play debut with the same name and wishes to demonstrate again in their new show between 8th and 14th of May in the theater gallery nº60, in Chiado in Lisbon, titled "dark tourism".

They are a lot of new theater group which differs you from other existing ones?
Ivo Silva: The Silly Season is a platform for artists, all different, we are five elements; we joined because we were friends and shared the same aesthetic and artistic choices. It is a company, but at the same time is not, the "Silly Season" survive beyond the spectacle.

In what way?
Rita Morais: The show is called "Silly Season". It was the first at that time we did not know it would be so positive, that we were to expand this concept more broadly in our lives. The show, which premiered in October last year, was supposed to be only one, but as it was possible to extend this experience, we decided to transform the title of the play on the name of the group, trying to make art of all forms. Since the theater is the best umbrella for this, because for us, contemporary postmodern theater embraces everything and thus allows us to do what we want within this inner harmony.

So what is the contemporary postmodern theater?
RM: It is a total absence of a consistent drama, characters and units that assumes temporal, spatial and action space. The classic falls to the ground.

But, you improvise on stage is that it?
RM: It has nothing to do with that. We have text, we have everything. Instead of the public being transported magically to a fiction like this when watching a soap opera, we constantly show the skeleton of what we are as people on the scene. There is a kind of approach towards what we are showing here, with however a certain distancing from real life, we show ourselves to ourselves saying things much more interesting than we were on the day-to-day basis. We are trying to be more than we would be if we had an opportunity to do theater. It is a poetic idea, but at the same time practical.

Use the physical?
RM: The physique, the voice, our ideas, our speeches and then shared it all with others. Make them think with us or without us what would be even better.

You are all actors or have different areas of artistic training?
Ricardo Teixeira: We started at the same school all in the "Ballet Theatre of the Oporto" and then proceeded to the conservatory which is now a college of art and cinema. Four of us followed the course of interpretation, Ivo Silva did dramaturgy.

Ultimately complement each other.
Ivo Silva: Yes, and we have people who work for us.
RM: Ricardo Peneda, which is the area of the video, we had to ask for some support outside the group, us the five are mostly from the performative area than the rest, in this case the world of technology, none of us are far ahead in this direction and now we also have John Leitao that is here to stay.

The Silly Season is what?
IS: It's a concert. We took that structure and put it in the theater, that is, the two concepts fused together live on stage, played in order to gain a balance in the show to be seen. From here we took the theory of Fernando Pessoa, his fifth empire.
RM: Basically we are giving a concert that transmits content not from the musical point of view, but theatrical. These are conversations, scenes between us, choreography, lot of things, vast, less concerned with being music. And such scenes, which would melodies, we ended up fetching the concept of the fifth empire, specifically the four previous, Greece, Rome, Christianity and Europe who have passed and we need a fifth, which is the Sebastian's myth. Are flashbacks, revisitations of what went along with humanity. There is a scene in which they think is best in Europe, another reflects more the idea of religion and God, then there are others that are our ideas about the history of mankind, because inevitably we are part of it. There is always this game of universal discourse and we particularized it at the same time. How do we appropriate the mold of a concert and suddenly give the viewer what we think is more genuine? It is not picking up a guitar and playing, but our concept is to share the concert theater.

Silly Season why?
RM: Because it assumes worrying abstaining ideals of society. In terms of the press August and September is the period of the "silly season" because there is never great news, no politics, and no major issues. What is fundamental to advancing society ceases to exist. The Sebastian's myth translated to this day turns out to be a silly season. So are the "silly season", the band is only after we have become the theater group and we are in apathy, but we want to move forward and get out of here, we want the fifth empire. It's the final concert, as the contest of "idols" when one of the competitors is eliminated and they show the video of the great moments of his life there, is more or less what we the humanity are in silly season, seeing everything we did and enough with the sun, sand, palm trees and pools, there is a lot to live beyond that.

You already have in place a new theater project ...
Miguel Cunha: The next project we are developing, "dark tourism" in the literal sense is a tourist destination of great disasters, like Hiroshima, Auschwitz, the Prazeres cemetery, and we will inspect this concept.

What led them to create a group in a country that does not value the culture?
MC: We make our contribution. It is an expression of us, because sometimes we are classified as a generation without principles, naughty and we are not like that. You also need to rewrite history. If we all leave who will be here in fifty or sixty years? So that is it, a group who wants to work together, to think about the issues and have fun. It also to show all our work to people.

There is also the public, you decided to continue because they appear.
RT: Yes, because when we started nobody had much knowledge and now we are building an audience that now accompanies us. Debuted in October last year and we reset in December in Lisbon, the same people who had gone seen the show went to see it again and this is very gratifying. The feeling of building something and that we have "fans."

So is false idea that there are empty theaters.
RM: Of course they are compared with empty stadiums, but that will always happen. The culture is inevitable in life, in my and any person, only one has more urgency in contact with this reality than others. We are coming along and give the world, I prefer to say that rather that nation, but the country also, of course, I am a patriot as you will see in the show and I lack the flag of Portugal! (Laughs) I think is believing that there will always be people who want to share these moments.
