The one-man band

Created in mid-2005 by musician David Santos, his alter ego, Noiserv has established itself as one of the most creative and exciting musical projects, ever encountered in Portugal in the last decade. "Almost visible orchestra" was the last album released by this young musician, on tour all over the world.

I was in doubt on how you build your songs.
Noirsev: For the albuns or in concert?

The records. Because I have the impression that although you have titles that refer to a number of things, is in the music that we found the meaning and not exactly in the lyrics. It seems that you build your sounds by layering.
N: I think the issue of layearing in the lattest album is the combination of both, as is the lyrics and the music itself were also as a union to reach the title and is not a specific thing that is in the lyrics.

But what comes first? It's the idea?
N: Titles normally appear at the end, because it is after listening to the music itself with lyrics and the instumental part I try to understand what the song conveys me and I want the title transpose all this. First is always an instrumental basis whatsoever, or guitar or piano, which appears for 30 to 40 seconds, is the idea of a set of chords that is what I like. Following this, I insert a voice graft that fit well with this sound and from there, those 40 seconds, I will then work all music and make all the arrangements over this small base. Always comes up the instrument, then the voice to complement and then all these layers you refer.

With regard to your first album, "one houndred miles of thoughtlessness- the day in the day of the days" what changed in relation to your second work?
N: I as a musician was better on the second record than in the first, ie the five years that separated the two albums, come after many concerts, after buying some instruments, experiencing many things and I myself realize what was the music I could do, get it? In terms of technical skills, structures and arrangements that may contain in a song, I think I'm more competent on this record than the previous. Not that the old album is bad, but I find it less complex, there is something that "almost visible orchestra" is much more worked, more refined and the first was something more spontaneous.

There are two tones on the first record, seems more black and white, this new musical record has a lot of color. Why you did this distinction even in the videos?
N: It's quite what I was saying, this albun is as if you have a color esprecto and to be complete not only have black and white, I think this record is more complete than the last. In the first study, the concept of black and white had much to do with the cover, which is with color pencil, was the idea of a basis for a black and white world that one can make colorful. In this last album no, I pulled more songs, are much more complex issues, when I heard the music and the route it would take, I saw the difference between one and the other, this has a lot more lights, more environments and senses.

Your first album was a success not only from the public, as for the critics. Interestingly, you say that is a less debugged record.
N: I think in terms of criticis, I do not think it's worse than the previous album, the former took more people by surprise, I was not known, nothing, then it appeared the universe of my music. I think this is a follow up, I do not think that my first musical work is bad, I think is that I am more competent and I better play the instruments at this time, I think this is the best done. It's like an athlete who maybe in its first year in competition not done as good as the last time, which is not to say that in the beginning you did tried not to do your best.

When you think the songs you think in English?
N: Yes, it happens a lot. The songs I did in stage clearly there were in Portuguese, after all these years, which are almost 10 years singing in English, when I'm playing, or singing I do it in English.

How come?
N: I think it has to do with the musical influences that had at the time, in my teens I heard "Nirvana", "Garbage" and "Pearl Jam" was not "Sérgio Godinho" and so when caught the guitar and I started to play the first few times, the melodies in my head it came up with English words. I have a theme in Portuguese and I think nowadays is an interesting challenge to do so, I intend to continue in the future, but it is something new. When in English I do it well, today I already realize when a piano base asks me a lyric in Portuguese or English and it is working.

And now, are you preparing a new record or not?
N: I have tiny ideas, but it's still all very draft. I launched the album last year and spent the 2014 full of concerts and projects, but I had not really much time to sit, to think and make music.

The songs who already have composed which is what defines you as best songwriter?
N: I do not know if there is one, an album is a collection of songs and emotions. I am this set, there is not a song that I feel full, because I need the other emotions, but going back to the beginning of the conversation, the latest album defines who I am more, because it gave me a lot of work to do and it was very complex and I think it is in a very good place. The work was done a year ago and when I hear the songs I do not regret it, I would not change anything, because it took me a long time to reach this final product and I am still satisfied.
