The hiper-realistic

Written by

Alberto Santos expressed his emotions through pure realism, which almost makes us doubt that it is a painting. It is an artistic expression that involves his truth, an almost obsessive perfectionism that transforms the ordinary into a beautiful work of art.

When he began your love for the arts?
Alberto Santos: It was when I was a kid.

At what age?
AS: I'm committed to my art since my twenties. I started drawing in 1995, I was studying and then I left.

But why did you left school?
AS: On the differences I had with the art schools, art changed this conceptual image of the form, the concept of the image. Currently, my painting are from the last century, is not very well regarded, because I can use a photo that makes no difference, but for me this is just a reference. The scenario I 'm building is an intellectual possession of what I do and what will inspire me. For this painting inspired in a fado song, I used the birds of the island and there is a darkness that is inspired by the nineteenth century, by French painting, is very realistic. Also express the female figure, as individuality.

You describe your paintings as hyperrealism.
AS: Yes, I think it may be that hyper -realism, I'm close to photorealistic. Of course, previously they used models and were in full size. The hyper -realism begins in the 60s of the twentieth century, then became smaller, the idea is to be able to do something as realistic as a photo. And in Century / XVII XVIII were made realistic paintings without the use of photography.

How many months you need to do one of your paintings?
AS: I do not know. Depends on the conceptualization of the frame. As I do, how will I build it, who will be the woman.

But question is people like it?
AS: No, only if it is an order. The background elements have to speak up, have a speech, an interaction with the figure ends up being which explains the background. It is its great exponent.

For Pedra Sina residence what you sought to explore?
AS: Well, what in Venezuela is called magic art, certain childishness. It is an art form more harmless , less affected , has a serious speech , but not heavy .

What is the serious side ?
AS: It can be the sad life of the clown , people who are dedicated to entertainment . It is also a sad job , who lives from making faces. It's kind of rudeness from reality .

To paint you need a muses ?
AS: Yes , but it is by chance. In this case it was so, it is a Portuguese woman, is a very attractive one.

But your other work also has a woman who draws much attention .
AS: But that is another concept of urban realism . It's different . I took the urbanity as the proper aspect of art that looks like the Dadaists that took in the ordinary , put it upside down and it was art . This movement appears with Marcel Duchamp , after the Second World War . The art wanted to change into something more conceptual and they did it , took things and put them in another context as if they were art and urban realism comes from there , is the point of view of the twentieth century . It's kind of everything is plastic, disposable, that one day is used and the other is discarded .

The urbanism comes from that , the city .
AS: Yes and present life . We see these things as something more romantic, urban realism also show that anecdotal reality and make our lives a little romantic and end up living of it. But, with a greater realism and idealization of beauty as such. And also something povera art (poor art) , a movement of the twentieth century , which used scrap materials for art , rotten wood , old newspapers , rags , were the scenario stinks , but it is an art and sweetened and my what sells is the mistake, is not a craft , but it's like magic art , harmless and that also makes you confront with yourself . The work always affects humans and there may be a negative emotion , but I think they are not many .

The light of the framework has to do with personality.
AS: It is natural light . I choose always to have a single focus , a direction and there is a strong dark , this reality in my case is critical .

Costs you to sell your work ?
AS: I cannot sell them , people it see it as a girlfriend I had and this is something impersonal , which is what they say . It is very difficult to sell the paintings , because they think they are too big , or too dark and impersonal . I presented some work in the International Biennial of Madeira , in the House of Light , but no more than that.

And do not sell overseas ?
AS: They see it as something related to me . It is not a landscape . The magic art is good , because it sells well in Venezuela . Is the circus world , almost surreal , but I do not follow this movement , in Pedra Sina I did , because I was there for only two weeks .

How do you define yourself as an artist ?
AS: I want to stay true to my proposal and my reality is always to show the beauty, the truth.
