The imaginery of Maria

Written by

Her name is Edna; she prefers to be Imaginary Mary because the designation brings us to a childhood world filled with colorful illustrations that define her artistic universe. A world invented by this young Portuguese illustrator, with only 26 years, which goes beyond the borders of our country, and whose early career is expected to be long and filled with huge success.

Why have you created this pseudonym?

Imaginary Maria: I thought it was an appropriate name for what I did.

Your illustrations, is based on the fairy tales of your childhood?

MI: No, I think. It is simply a kind of illustration linked to childhood, but that does not refer in any way the tales or stories.

How your creative process does take place?

MI: I have ideas and a work depends on whether commissioned or not. I always try to adapt them to get a good concept in a way that people understand the message and are adapt it to my style.

When did started this passion for design?

MI: Since I went to school I think. I took a course in illustration and comics in Ar.Co. But I work more professionally since 2009.

Since always you knew you wanted to follow the arts?

MI: Since I was little I always liked to draw and paint. Only after 14 years of age is that I decided I want to make this my life, arts as a profession.

To show your work, as a rule you try to participate in exhibitions?

MI: So, if you notice the site, most of the works I do result from exposures. The illustrations for books were only three.

How do you choose the topics, the number of works that you want to exhibit?

MI: It depends, if I create a solo exhibition concept and try to adapt it to fit well in space. If it's a group show, I have in mind the overall theme and what they ask. But I always try to do something that falls well in the gallery.

Would you rather make pictures? Why?

MI: I do not know, I think is part of my style. I cannot explain just why. I do always prefer pictures rather than other type of illustration.

The colors you use have an influence?

IM: A lot. I think that's why I follow the path of the arts, what led me to painting were the colors. I love them.

I noticed you have a very soft color palette. Has something to do with your personality?

MI: I do not know. I'm not exactly a gentle person. I think! (Laughs) I am always using those colors and have been staying; they are the ones I like best.

And for when the next show?

IM: I have now a show in Rome. They invited me, I do not know how they got to my work, didn't asked how the process took place, but I think it was through the internet. It is a group exhibition with several artists. Soon, I'll present another one in Lisbon and in Oporto.
