The utilitarian's

Written by

The gallery of Mouraria now has a small exhibition of design objects created by various artists from Madera. A concept which aims to encourage the purchase of utilities artifacts with an artistic touch for embellishing your everyday life.

The theme of this exhibition is utility, which is the reason behind this?
Trinidade Vieira: Is an idea I had for over a year. I have no commercial spirit and months went by and thought there might be a solution for this. The gallery of Mouraria would be ideal, as is a large space and has another smaller room, I thought they might find this idea interesting and they did. I approached him last year in December and in January he told me he liked it and we decided to launch the concept.

What is the idea that you want to develop through this event?
TV: Is to create a space that we call design shop, a bit of  those we see in major galleries or museums where there is a merchandising store after a visit in which people come and buy a poster, a keychain, whatever they like.

I noticed you did a few bags with prints of the banana?
TV: Yes, but it already had them for two to three years. There are parts of my creations in these last five years

But, you continue with your environmental concerns?
TV: Yes very much and want to instill in this group. In general, the pieces of product can be single or multiple, but their purpose is to be useful. For various reasons, very often when we do a show people that come here, look and tell me they liked, but they have their walls full of art and I believe it. This is an alternative for them is all for the house, except for the walls.

In the future how people can access these objects of design?
TV: We used the whole room for this event, because there was not an exhibition at the moment, which was great. But, will have a new show, which will happen soon in twenty days, the design objects will now be displayed in the small room. That is, a space for these unique pieces of design. I am the one with more objects, because the other artists did not have time and also because this concept was more entrenched. They are pieces that would not say they are biodegradable, but most of them were recycled. It is the concept of "found objects" which means objects at the end of life, which are thrown into the trash. In the case of PVC pipe I gave it a second vision; I reused it and did a magazine rack. The tables are tiles that have not reached an artistic quality enough to be on a wall, so I recreate them as utilitarian objects.
