The court of the north take us to the remote island of Madeira in the late nineteenth century and the enigmatic presence of the Baroness of Madalena do Mar which is finally unraveling by her great-grandchildren, Rosamunde. This film by Joao Botelho shows the lives of several women from the same family, which are embodied by the same actress Ana Moreira. To this end, the director, uses various flashbacks that culminate with the unveiling of this mystery that runs through many generations of the Barros. The performance of Ana Moreira in this film is colossal, are five major characters, but her interpretation is not the best because you cannot discern significant differences between them, which makes the drama sequence a bit confusing. I think that the whole weight of the film fell on her back and would probably be better to distribute the roles of some of the characters by other actresses. What excited me most was the photography of Joao Ribeiro. The images are of great aesthetic beauty, thereby aggravating the tragic tendency of this film. Another curious aspect is the inherent theatricality of this film; the plans follow a dynamic that involves a large number of characters in the same framework, in the case of the scenes in the brothel, where Emilia de Sousa is the subject of the love of Joao Sanha and Gaspar de Barros and the family gatherings of Agueda and Tristan. It is a very interesting movie as a whole and one of the best film directors Joao Botelho.

The art of animation may be endangered in our country due to lack of financial support.

The animated film began timidly in the early days of silent film and was gaining a greater projection over time. Today, they occupy a prominent place in the juvenile entertainment, although there are projects that go beyond to a more adult audience. In our country there are two producers companies of animated film that has gained international projection. The film resulted from Rui Cardoso Martins script that plunged into a world apart from mazes created by the linking of eight blocks of buildings that were called J Zone, in Chelas. This feature film was a box office hit in 1998, 250,000 spectators went to the movie theaters and helped launch the career of actress Nuria Madruga and other young Portuguese actors. Until recently, residents in the neighborhood of the County felt even more stigmatized and discriminated since the debut of this film. From the halls of death, the preferred labyrinth of drug addicts, prostitutes and young offenders there is nothing left, has been demolished by the local council and its residents were relocated to other residential areas of the city of Lisbon. This adventure is the sixth most watched film in Portugal, with about 125 000 spectators who surrendered to the adventures of a group of friends who find themselves involve in great mysteries and deeds that always turn out all right. This film is no exception. There was a great deal of care in the adaptation and the result is in sight. It is a feature film of great quality. I will first focuses on the special effects, which I think are excellent, giving the film a higher density and creating more dramatic suspense. Has a luxurious cast. With the very professional Carriço Ricardo, Ana Padrão, Sofia Grilo, Joao Didelet and Sandra Barata Belo, large-caliber actors of the national artistic scene, they acted as support for a group of younger artists, but not less experienced. The young cast came from the juvenile television version, which helped further to consolidate this movie. The direction of Carlos Coelho da Silva confirmed his talent as a filmmaker. Scriptwriters are to be congratulated, because the text did not fell short and the original language is adequate without seeming false and the action was well done. On the whole this movie was a great entertainment moment and proved that there is a younger audience that craves for this kind of productions.

The main character, played by Ana Bandeira, Salomé is the gem of this film, her debut on this film, I can only say that could not have been more auspicious. Its youth and freshness pass thru the screen, the camera loves the face of this young actress. Mário Barroso's work is remarkable. The story of this young prostitute in a brothel in Lisbon is told in a competent manner. The director knew how to create a story without ever denigrating the book which was adapted. It is a lyrical film about a Portugal from the beginning of the twentieth century, steeped in poverty and social turn boil, catapulted by the Fatima apparitions that have an important role to play in the life of Salome. The work of the other actors is capable; I can only have one but, the naked scenes completely unnecessary. I discussed this issue elsewhere, and continue to reaffirm it, it is curious how the actresses take their clothes off several times in a movie and is not the case with the Portuguese male characters. It is excessive. A nude scene can be visually artistic necessary considering the script, but in most cases it is not. There are so many nude scenes that trivialize the film itself. What would happen if we transported Romeo and Juliet for the twenty-first century and instead of a mere mortal fight between families, we talked about a great rivalry between two football teams? What if instead of having on the background a city called Verona, was the Unbeaten, Porto? We would assume a calculated risk, because it is a timeless love story and at the same time, foregrounds in the game. Two opposite worlds, or maybe not. This is the story of star crossed, a movie that deserves some credit for the idea itself and nothing else. Unfortunately. Now Portugal is becoming very similar to our American counterparts in producing these mushy films. I understand that a bilingual text is difficult to write in order to make sense, but it is such a titanic task that can limits itself to do the essential. I cannot find explanation for great ideas in cinematic terms, which then fade in stingy dialogues. The editing of this film would have deserved a better reflection, although there are images of a great scenic beauty. I think more appropriate to incorporate Romeo and Juliet in the city of Oporto, would have been better suited to film sleeping beauty. I liked the young actors and once again Virgilo Castelo convinces on his role, a mister, this man. The analogies that everyone tries to make with the national soccer I do not think were important to the production, or maybe they were and were not clear in the film, as some of the scenes that left you also with some doubt. Overall, not bad but could have been much better, is a very commercial product. Good movie!
