The sword and the rose

Written by

It is a film by Joao Nicolau about Portuguese pirates.

It is the most civilized pirate movie I ever watched. The beginning did not denounce it and when finally the main character, narrator and singer on board, Manuel, the actor also Manuel Mesquita, embarks on the adventure of this unusual ship populated with alleged terrors of the seas, my puzzlement is even greater. The socializing scenes between the crew make our notion of piracy even more subjective, not to mention strangely omitted. The twist happens when one of the crew decided to commit an act of treason, which unfortunately I did not fished! It's a weird movie and we only get a certain action, let us say, when the pirates decide to kidnap a few tourists. The journey they engage to avoid been discovered and leads them to a farm somewhere in the interior of the Alentejo, is the most extraordinary. I would say that is a Portuguese pirate movie, the spirits are exalted, but not much, all behave accordingly and are polite until someone loses his temper in a civilized way, which means, speak without being interrupted, the scenes of captivity could have been hilarious, the colorful garments of the prisoners are priceless, but it end up being ridiculous! To aggravate further my confusion, I was unaware if it was an adventure movie or a comedy; I sincerely had doubts about that. For all these reasons, I did not like it, maybe because I'm used to a world filled with bloodiest vindictive, treacherous, violent and masked characters featuring pirate's movies. Good movie!
