Full house, thel bets are off

This is the story of an inveterate poker player and the adventures that have led to a series of problems. A short film by Rui Rodrigues and Bruce Paulino da Silva who, unlike our anti-hero they took the fight and won.

How did you got the idea for this movie?

It was an idea that occurred to me and my friend Bruce, who is another director, in the coffee shop. In Madeira they have the mentality that nothing is done, you can only can do something if there is support. And Bruce and I decided to make a movie without anyone's help. I had a sheet with a draft histor. We knew the Die4films, let's talk to them and risk. We were two kids with no training in the area but very willing to take the project forward. We contacted the producers they liked the idea. We begin by working on the script, developed the story and it became solid. It was then presented to the actors. At the time I was doing some acting and some of our friends from the theather participated on full house. The film was a psychological slap for all those artists who live in that world that we can only make art if they have support. An artist takes his worth and they have exhibited. We wanted to see how far we could go. We won the festival here in Madeira, but also we competed at the Cannes Film Festival. The curious thing is that we show the first short film there than here. It was weird.

What was the reaction at Cannes to your short?

They liked it. And thought it was good for a first experience.

And here? In the International Festival of Funchal?
It was very good. Journalists and film critics have told us: it is good, this is cool, for the first approach is five stars. The story is repetead, it's poker that goes sour, whe there is blood everywhere, dead and wounded. We are two young people who love films and then joined in and said: let's make a movie, one of those crazy things that come up in the moment.

If you did not have any training in how did you felt this need to write at least one draft?

These are things we write and do not know why. It was funny to do this and I've wrote it. And when Bruce said let's make the movie, I immediately remembered the paper. There are moments in life when we do certain things and we do not know why. I think everyone has a phase where we will do this and see if it bears fruit in the future. And it did.

They never felt limited in some way because they were on an island?

No, no. It's was like this, let's do and see what happens. And we use only the resources that we had, a semi-professional camera was a great help and we use it the most. No matter if you're an island or not, let's conquer the world.

Writing a consistent argument took too long?

It took about two months. It had time. Another thing I learned is that the plot is always being changed. With this method of work the short film became more solid. Completely different from the initial draft, even with the short film almost closed until the end I did editing, I had to make changes, becouse I did not have in memory all that had been filmed. I saw the whole, but as we went along I understood that it had weak moments, so I had to go back and rewrite everything.

You had a clear vision of what would be the story, or just when you edit everything became more clear?

There are aspects that from the outside we know that do not add up. I can not put a camera out the window to go everywhere. Now I have this notion. As two inexperienced kids imagined a thousand and one things and there was a call to reality when they said, look we have only one camera, if you want a high level will have to climb the piggyback each other and we will not invent cranes. In my mind, had better plans, but in practice had to be changed.

Unforeseen?

We arranged a day for filming and no one came, we contacted the producer to delay and they told us no, it had to be shoot that day. What happened? We had to shoot other film sequences that were more forward and then in the remaining days of shooting we went back.

are you preparing another short? Or higher flights, a long?

It's another short but I don't like to talk about it. First I hit the ground, I'm going slowly, but I'll get there. The short films gave us a lot of headaches. When you can be comfortable in shorts, in which you plan from beginning to end, even all thats imagine being achieved, then i'll step to the film.

And first experience has succeeded in helping you overcome the technical difficulties that you had with your shortfilm?

Yes, now I can do better, because we are always able to get around. And I have to imagine a story with those tecnical means and thus can do what I want. But i have my imagination to pull over, I always try to work towards higher standards and be more innovative. Provoke more feelings to people. Trying to show something that was not seen, or at least something that they are not used.

Did you applied you short film to compete at the national level?

We compete at all the festivals from North to South. They say that the only show unvision ones. In Vila do Conde at least they only accept Premiers, I know this because I spoke with one then at Cannes, I asked him if we could present our work in Portugal. And he replied that because we did an international debut at the festival, they could not present our short in Portugal. And that's sad. So if I have to choose a Cannes or Toronto, or anyware, I will choose the foreign. It is my personal choice. We went to the Festival in Madeira because it's my home and I know all the people.

And the rest?

The rest did not even respond. I've been waiting for a reply until almost the end of the deadlines for submitting an application and nothing. But I also understand that with so much demand there might be no time for answers.
