At the highest peak of portugal

Written by

There is a small publisher, the company of the islands , founded by Carlos Alberto Machado and Sara Santos, on the island of Pico in the Azores. It is an almost utopian dream which seeks to give greater visibility to the new Portuguese writers of fiction , but also publishes poetry and theater .

What was the need to create a publishing house in the Azores ?
Carlos Alberto Machado : Well, there is always the need for publishers regardless of where we are. Fortunately there are many people, many authors to publish. There are more known, others less, that in general terms . In the Azores, in particular , there was a lack of publishers with a wider spectrum, not just publications on Azorian topics but mainly local writers , since the two that exist normally never engaged in the publication of new authors. There are also personal reasons and other, more general , but that is the life of publishers to appear and disappear .

But what are the challenges for a publishing company in the islands ?
CAM : There are very real challenges, there is a set of Azorean authors are not publish and we can do it. It is a project in parallel one with the other . We released more poetry and theater, something that is not very common in national publishers and we are going to keep this line . This year we 'll start other areas. In the background when someone creates a publisher tries to differentiate itself from other projects , not to be distinguished, but because we are different people and have differing ideas about the books we think are accurate and that are interesting to offer to readers.

Addressed to publish new authors , but it is only the Azorean writers or appear others outside the islands ?
CAM : We have no age preference . In the Azores and elsewhere, but here in particular , the two publishers who are relatively recent privilege the consecrated. We thought that the offer should be guided by quality and hence we can publish both the author with a name made in the market, and one that is appearing, or has published little things . We start publishing a magazine with only Azorean authors addressed exclusively to the archipelago and that favors the relatively young novelists with the maximum of 40 years of age, but with the peculiarity of not having work published, or at least almost none. This is an important aspect. We publish already some national authors , including two writers whose books were the first to be edited, but it not only just the new one.

The Azorians , being islanders, are preferably poets ?
CAM : I think not , because the texts that will be publishing there is much fiction, told you about the magazine whose content we opted not to include poetry, but mostly fiction , though there have been major Azorean poets. I do not know if there's a big difference, I cannot say all of this safely, do not know if the region differs from the rest of the country in this regard , people said that Portugal is a country of poets , maybe it's true, because there very good poetry in our country .

But , about Azorean poets do not notice any difference ?
CAM : From waht I know , no. There are good and bad as everywhere , there are people who write here, others with a work already done, it is difficult to say something so blunt. Maybe there are people who write and we do not know, we have received immense proposals that come to us by post and email , a bit everywhere and we appreciate these works , so cannot say for sure if there are differences, but there are in terms of quantity, the region has 250,000 inhabitants and the entire nation has 10 million .

Azorean read a lot?
CAM : It's the same kind of question , national data are not different from the regional , although it seems to me the contact I have here, as living on an island is only just a living in one, basically a person who lives in Lisbon knows about the reality of the nine as I of the eight , the less population on the islands the less reading habits . In the remaining with few centuries of life the reading levels will be higher . At the bottom will be no different from the coastal areas of the continent relative to the innermost territory away from urban centers . We have a homogeneous country with such differences between rural areas and the cities .

In terms of taste of literary genres there are differences ?
MAC : What is noticed here, as also in some regions of the continent 's greater attractiveness by local authors , in a small book fair that exist here , people tend to search for authors or Azorian themes, both in terms fictional , documentary or historical . I think nowadays the easy access to internet and cable TV brings people and all that is talked in the media is more or less known and the rest is hidden somewhere .

Also publishes essays theater or dramatic literature ?
MAC : We released until now only plays, not just a collection dedicated to the topic and do not have essays.

Yet it is an unusual area for a publisher .
MAC : It is true in Portugal there is only a publisher with some regularity " Cotovia" , or " Artistas Unidos " which is done in partnership .

But , why this choice ?
MAC : I did theater for many years , wrote plays, have that particular taste , it is a bit personal so to speak .

You focused earlier on new approaches that intend to put into practice in the publishing company, in addition to the magazine, has noticed that writing courses .
MAC : We first wanted to do that, but no longer do, because here there is no market . We are a small almost familiar business and initially when we formed the company had these strands that can be seen on the website and one of them is writing, as we have to pay someone to come from the mainland , the plain fair and stay, all this makes it complicated to have these activities regularly , we made only one , that went well . The "company of the islands " is dedicated to publishing books , a few unique notebook with Azorean motifs and do some occasional work of communication and marketing for some organizations in the island.

What is the feedback from the web page in terms of book sales ?
MAC : It is weak . The idea we have by talking to other people , the only who sells books online on the websites are big brand companies like Porto editora, fnac , etc. Or bestsellers and textbooks because the domestic market is unbalance, only sells what appears on television or in magazines. But I know other people with identical pages and they sell very little .

Is it a dream ?
MAC : These little things always end up being a dream, a bit utopian .

But , it is feasible to have such a small publisher in a publishing world where companies are clustered in groups?
MAC : I do not know if it is feasible , the only certainty I have is that if it didn't exist about 30 , 40 small publishers the public had not the freedom of choice , because large ones do not edit most of the literature that is published in this country, simply refuse . As in poetry, they hear about it and close the drawer, so it's an issue of freedom . From the strictly economic point of view is not feasible, we do not win, but we do not lose money either, but that is not our goal . Our intention is to publish a book and sell it as much as possible in order to print the next . But I think this pressure that small publishers do on major is healthy .

What is the next step beyond the magazine?
MAC : The next step is to continue with the small collections, we maintain more or less the same pace of publication and we will launch two more , one called "third border " of nature essays on literature , aesthetics , politics , and finally another is called " worlds " generally is referred to as travel literature , though I am not very fond of this expression . In March , two books come out and we will also strengthen the Azorean component.

On average how many books you print by edition ?
MAC : In medium we print up 300 copies , which for a small publisher is good when it comes to poetry and theater . Even these numbers may not be correct we are always trying to do the math and it is not easy ( laughs ).
