The drama and laugher festival

Written by

Its ten days of theater for all ages and all types of audiences. With an ambitious program, the experimental theater group of Camacha, intends to create a huge feast of the performing arts. A unique festival of its kind nationally that provides a large perspective of the best we can on stage in our country. So show up, for god sake!

This third edition of "I love you theater" expanded. Why did you decide to take this step in the third year?
Sara Branco: We're slowly growing. In the first year we had five groups, we boosted one from the mainland and four locals. Last year we had 14 groups, four of them out and the rest from here. In this issue we have 18 groups and so we grow slowly. As people come to the theater this event will be expanding, we also want to spread this festival in the entire island and eventually to Europe. The goal is to grow in quantity, quality and space.

In previous editions the festival shows unconventional theater. You continue with this line?
SB: We had tremendous success with this type of choices. The public appears. There was a group that presented a mixture of water, light and images and we had a full house. The theater is not just room. The artist is a combination of several factors, he can do nothing, just be a statue, but there he is in front of an audience, or mixed between people. Being an artist has many aspects and performance art is not just some people on stage, can be painting, music and all this results in creativity. It's a bit of everything that we want to show at this festival.

In previous editions I noticed that the public came from other places to watch the shows.
SB: Yes, it was a big gamble and this is another cause for celebration for the organization. The public is not only of Camacha, although the local population is very faithful, so we have to say it. But people come from Funchal, Canico, Machico, other places, and turns out to be true to our shows. In the early days, only locals show up and them we start to see people from the outside. The word goes by and people are sensitive to the theater.

In terms of the program what has changed?
Carina Teixeira: In terms of program, as already noted, he has different groups. We varies from those who come from outside. Mostly we have tried to bet on bigger groups, or who has the most peculiar spectacles. This year, we have the presence of the Commune, theater research, which brings the piece "design for living." We want to provide more alternative groups. This year's program is different in one aspect, we have more performance shows. There is an alternative night that will be held in Camacha, in a restaurant basket in the basement, is an attempt to draw younger people to see theater. This shows commitment to bodily expression in visual presented by the group unsightly. That same day, Taciana Gouveia will show body painting and artwork. We also have the "theatrical shorts" they show a work of music and repercussion. This is to emphasize as I said earlier, that the theater does not only happen on stage. It is a mixture of music, with declamation, poetry and painting. It is a work of creation. The artist reinvents himself as someone already said. I think that says it all. This year we decided to extend a little longer even have the participation of the "Corner House" had been present last year and they bring a Galician group. This is an asset for us. What is required? Not only visibility for groups that come from the outside, it is often what people think, that everything that comes from outside is good, no, we want to create channels of communication, exchange of ideas and that artists came inside to know our work. We bet a lot on interaction between people and all the backstage where regional artists and outsiders can establish ties. If you pass the word that we are as good as others, it is very good in regional terms.

The audience of "I love you theater" you already wan. How did you convince the authorities to support a theater festival?
SB: It is important to present a reliable design, I think it should be the first step we must take. Must be something with quality and structure, because if it is not intended to be like that and does not have clear goals, everything is lost. The first rule is to present a project with quality, feasible, and to show that we want to work. We cannot keep waiting for things to fall in our lap. We have to move, to be proactive and get to work. Backups appear in many different ways, not merely monetary , such as the giving the facilities, support for transportation are essential.
