The warm voice that come from the cold

Written by

Johan Rodrigues was born in Stockholm but grew up in Portugal, the son of a Portuguese father and Swedish mother, began writing songs at age 15 when he learned the first chords. He has no formal musical training, writes, composes, plays, sings and produces all the songs from his debut EP "One". In Portugal he won two first prizes in two contests, New Talent Fnac Coimbra 2009 and in 2011 with the Creative Incubator project 'Aboutowake'.

Tell me about this new musical work, "One" and why these songs?
Johan Rodrigues: The title "One" appears for several reasons, the first of which is because it is a solo work, so despite having an EP with producer Björn Öqvist that was recorded in Sweden. The songs were written while I was in that country at Christmas and then when I came here I recorded them. On the other hand, chose April 1st to launch this work, available on the internet.

Have written songs in English and none are in Portuguese why?
JR: I also write songs in Portuguese, for this work I decided it would be in English to cover the greatest number of people, not only the Portuguese. It is a five-song EP, also wrote in Portuguese, but I will include them in the next album.

Why you chose these five songs, is there any point in common between them? If it not why?
JR: I started this EP at the end of last summer. Moreover, the first theme that I put on the internet is a demo of the song "so is love" and then started making recordings. When I returned to Portugal was supposed to continue that work, but while listening to the recordings of what I had done in the late summer, I thought it was not it, I went through a learning process of music production and there is the difference between a demo and a final product. So I decided in January start all over again, because I felt that songs that spoke of personal experiences I went through had passed and had nothing to do with the work that I was developing, so there was a waiting period of rewriting the EP. What they have in common is that is a period of time where I experienced many things while traveling; it's sort of a diary.

A travel diary?
JR: Yes, and we are talking only of the part of the writing. The production itself was an evolutionary process, has changed between summer and early winter.

In producing this EP you did everything?
JR: Yes, except the mastering. And the palms, which appear as background, are of my sister and my mother is not a lie. (Laughs)

Let's talk about "The corner soul sessions" how did the opportunity to write this musical work appears?
JR: The corner soul is the name of the studio Björn Öqvist. I met him through the "my space" is a site that no one uses, nobody talks about it. At the time I was living in Sweden, I send him a link, he liked it, we decided to work together and the songs are the result of a period of time not as short as may seemed, were made up sporadically, it was intense, it took several months . It's an experiment in the studio, because it's not really a finished product. We started working together with the aim of showing it to the music record companies in Sweden, did show some cases, these demos we showed both in high profile record companies, who want a hit right at first, as smaller musical production companies, who are able to bet on more experimental work, but at the same must have something commercial. In this experiment there was a bit of everything, "she's rocking" that is more commercial and" the lake "is a song that we worked more. However, I returned here, but I'm always in contact with Björn, we intend to arrange a time to be together and work on new songs.

It yielded nothing, either by the most reputable or the more alternatives record companies?
JR: No, we kept the contacts. These are people who today I will show my work. Also lacked the time to perfect the ideas and songs and because I could not stand waiting, I decided to go ahead with the formation in musical production.

You feel as young musician that all technologies at your disposal and the internet become more difficult the task of artists have a record company, because they have to ensure that it will be a success?
JR: Yes, I felt that. In that case in particular we had contact with people. We did a mini concert for the industry. The Internet facilitates contact, on one hand, but then it is always a barrier, because all these professionals connected to the music, and the radios receive hundreds of emails from different bands and projects. I'm feeling like this, here, in Portugal, one of the principal means of reaching these people is the internet, but is not a direct contact at least I try to plant the seed and then wait. I believe that when you have good songs, people will also feel that it is theirs. What I want is to make known my work, I've been in several musical projects, but always felt like things did not depend only on me, came to an almost-almost, but did not happen. That's why this "one" is a great victory, it is the first, and I am going forward with my music.
