On the set of bullets and cookies

Written by

It is a chronicle different from the others because it addresses my personal experience during an afternoon of shootings of a camp scene.

I'll be honest when I received the invitation from the production of "bullets and cookies" I was very excited. I always wanted to live this experience because I just like movies. I must admit I had a somewhat romantic notion of what would be been on set, surrounded by actors, technicians and director. But let us stop rambling and let's get to it...
My story begins in Porto's cultural CACE in a sunny afternoon, a meeting place for all fans of the saga of this four rascals. The production decided to give an opportunity to the fans so they could participate in a casting for this last chapter. Adherence was huge, particularly males and of various ages. New departure for Gondomar, the outdoor set for the day. A rural nature plot is the basis of this very important action-packed scene. On the arrival I see a great frenzy of people who are finalizing the gypsy camp. Nothing was left to chance and that's it. I will not describe the scene, because I gave my word to the production that I wouldn't reveal too much so it won't ruin the surprise. And it will be a great one! Let's go straight to the point.

In Gondomar
The director, Luis Ismael, semi-prepared for the filming of the day, "argues" with the technicians the best place to mount the camera. Here I make a digression, a film with this nature, a very low cost one; usually they shot two takes, the camera is positioned differently for that purpose. Why? For the director, during assembly of the film could have two different plans, because if something goes wrong with one of them, there is at least one alternate take. Or just to choose the best. Sorry if I disappointed you. This is not a Steven Spielberg movie, with dozens of angles of the same shot. This is a Portuguese production with very low budget and always made with the great good will of all. While we wait, deciding to do this or not to, whether or not put the camera here or there, the actors Jorge Neto, João Pires and the extras are directed to where the expert in wardrobe and makeup artist in charge of "giving life " to the characters who will participate in the schedule takes. One by one they all have to go through this area to be characterized. But here comes an unexpected event. Although have appeared a few women extras, were nonetheless insufficient in number to the scene in question, setback easily solved by the female staff of the production. Let me explain, what is the greatest Portuguese virtue? No, not what you're thinking! Or maybe yes! It is our ability to improvise. And this is what happens also in the "bullets and cookies." Missing female figures? One of the girls responsible for catering becomes one of the characters and if necessary a line is written specially for her. This was the case. Everyone who joins the team is multi-tasking, even the cameramen are sometimes carpenters to assemble the scenarios if necessary. It is a cohesive team result of the complicity built over eleven years. The debut of the first film was in 2001. Imagine. Passion is such that some of the young people who are part of the technical team "grew up" on set, literally. After these very lame explanation of team spirit, but I underline that it is the purest of truths, it is necessary to situation.
After a burning afternoon of waiting I finally see the true start of the film recordings scheduled for the day. Despite the entire bustle surrounding the event, the fact is that it is a drought. Expect and desperate. After everything is ready on set scenes are filmed. In particular his one, the characters Tone, the Rat and Bino will meet new trouble with the gypsies. And I'm sorry to disappoint you guys, but everything happens quickly. We hear the directions of the Director of scene, screams silence, and soon after the action in minutes that seem mere moments everything is done. There is nothing romantic about it! Seriously. After waiting again for cameras to be replace for the next take, another quick dialogue and bang, ready and rap! Do you know what I think? Better wait for the movie and watch the latest and most exciting saga of the four most famous rascals of Portuguese cinema! And do not think I did not enjoy my day, by the contrary. It was wonderful, but I prefer the comfortable chair and the popcorn. Good movie!
