It is a film by Joao Nicolau about Portuguese pirates.
It is the most civilized pirate movie I ever watched. The beginning did not denounce it and when finally the main character, narrator and singer on board, Manuel, the actor also Manuel Mesquita, embarks on the adventure of this unusual ship populated with alleged terrors of the seas, my puzzlement is even greater. The socializing scenes between the crew make our notion of piracy even more subjective, not to mention strangely omitted. The twist happens when one of the crew decided to commit an act of treason, which unfortunately I did not fished! It's a weird movie and we only get a certain action, let us say, when the pirates decide to kidnap a few tourists. The journey they engage to avoid been discovered and leads them to a farm somewhere in the interior of the Alentejo, is the most extraordinary. I would say that is a Portuguese pirate movie, the spirits are exalted, but not much, all behave accordingly and are polite until someone loses his temper in a civilized way, which means, speak without being interrupted, the scenes of captivity could have been hilarious, the colorful garments of the prisoners are priceless, but it end up being ridiculous! To aggravate further my confusion, I was unaware if it was an adventure movie or a comedy; I sincerely had doubts about that. For all these reasons, I did not like it, maybe because I'm used to a world filled with bloodiest vindictive, treacherous, violent and masked characters featuring pirate's movies. Good movie!
Will be held from 15-17 June at the Seedling house, in Calheta.
This second edition of the Islands.doc "is assumed as an exhibition of documentary film that provokes questions and our universe. More than clarify, it wants to be a platform that encourages curiosity "as stated by the organization" ubanistasdigitais. This year's festival is the premiere national and internationally stage again award-winning documentaries covering topics such as technology, creativity, design, music, trends, irreverence and science
Each day opens with a section titled "local time", which will show films of various directors of Madeira. For this edition were invited filmmakers: Eduardo Costa, Filipe Ferraz, the pairs Pedro Sousa & Gonçalo Rodrigues and Nuno Gomes &Ricardo Sousa.
The event also features several parallel initiatives, where the public will find a suitable place to create synergies around the films, such activities being with a documentary film workshop with Nino Leitner, filmmaker, active participant of indie community and promoter of new technologies and trends within the current cinematic landscape. Another of the highlights of this festival is a night of pure improvisation in which the image is the thread of a sound trip. Without any trial, the talented musicians Nuno Filipe and Maggiore propose to follow the guidelines of Filipe Ferraz. Last Year Island. Docs edition zero, organized by Henrique Teixeira, honored filmmaker, photographer and painter William Klein, one of the most influential and controversial artists of the twentieth century. The festival also debuted in Madeira the documentary "Complex-parallel universe" of young Portuguese filmmakers, Mario and Pedro Patrocinio, the most seen long feature in our country, which had the background the social and cultural microcosm of the German complex, one of the largest slums in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
It's more example of the new animated film made by the Portuguese who conquered the world.
Independent features are almost a redundant term to characterize the new Portuguese cinema. They win international awards. They drive viewers to the cinema. They tell stories. The animation in this context is a different universe. It is ignored. It is seen as a minor art and as such has even less support. But it also enlists international praises. It also delights audiences as "the tragic story with a happy ending" by Regina Pessoa. It is the second short film of this young filmmaker who is the most awarded of Portuguese cinema. It is a different animation, who desires, which is different and stand out from the crowd, unlike the main character. So, I will not disclose no more. I leave the rest up to you. What I can say is that yes Regina Pessoa, is a director like no other. She grew up outlining inanimate tales with coal, in a somewhere village in the interior of Coimbra. She studied art and graduated in painting, a pictorial universe is reflected in his cinematic vision of the world. Her odyssey of images is in black and white, don't take it to hard, our dreams are populated with these two-tones in this narrative and the color is in the essence of these sensitive and emotional work dynamics that moves us to the depths of our existence . Good movie!

The sessions will take place in the auditorium of the Music Group of Miragaia, between 15th until the19th of May.
Movies of April seen in May, has, according to Tiago Afonso and Amarante Abramovici, core members of the confederation of theater and culture research, has this title, because "both are provocative, because here we will not see the Portugal's Revolution of the Carnations, of chaimites and popular organization, since "Brandos Costumes" precedes, and perhaps foreshadows the coup of 25th of April, and the other four films are already the result of the hangover of 1975-76.You'll see rather unlikely and rare films, which separately and together suggest an acid look on the mythical country and the real one. Lucid movies that may help us think about the Portugal of today. "This film series includes, Solveig Nordlund's work, entitled, "Dina and Django," of 1999. The movie leads us to a lost youth, which will be defoliating through the banality of the everyday life. "Seedlings changes" is the tour of a paralyzed young man in the city of Porto, in the post-revolution. It is the portrait of a change that marked an entire generation forever. "The desired or the mountains of the moon," Paulo Rocha, focuses on the career of a young men of April in Portugal, where the political crisis is the thread of a series of intrigues and passions that cross this difficult period and to close this movie cycle with a golden key that shows only Portuguese films, it is time for "Bobo" of Jose Alvaro Morais, is an adaptation of a novel by Alexander Herculano, which focuses on the last day of rehearsal of a theater play in the old studio Lisbon film. It is a feature about the adventures of current and the past while looking for a confrontation with the reality experienced by the artists. It was the first work of this filmmaker, who faced many financial problems to completion. As the country in which we live in.
It is apparently a sequel to the movie "the state of things" that took place in Sintra.
Wim Wenders is a poet of the images. Of the cities that is the space that he best likes to shoot and it shows up in this trip thru a Portuguese city, Lisbon. It is also a journey through the senses, is almost needless to look at, if we close our eyes, we hear the pulse of the city and recognize its corner, the walls, and the other side of the doors. It is also an ode to music, Madredeus who renovated Portuguese traditional music and in this feature film they are also part of this message of the "Portugality" present throughout the film, because Lisbon is not only the capital of Portugal, is above all the deepest essence of what is to be Portuguese. The images are a complement of this portrait of a metropolis facing fore to a river that looks like the sea. It is above all a tribute to cinema, which I enjoyed very much. If I did not know who the director is, I probably will say he was Portuguese. Wenders captured well the Lusitanian soul that he capture on street corners, in taverns, in Pessoa, in the most hidden places, who humbly tells its story without a great howls and apparent simplicity, more is impossible. It is a journey through a sound engineer, Philip Winter, starring the excellent Rüdiger Vloger, Mr. Winter, as children call him who also walks you through the city. There is a moment of great tenderness with director Antonio de Oliveira, who brings back to us the origins of cinema, Chaplin, the master. This is pure cinema, the intimate look of a director. Good movie.
There are several short films about real crimes.
The exemplary crimes written by Max Arub were the based for the first work of filmmaker Rita Nunes. The director divided into several chapters several crimes that resulted in a consistent and somewhat frightening cinematographic project. People kill even for trivial reasons. The work of the actors is excellent, but above all I liked the way she focuses its attention on the faces of his characters that apparently seem trivial people, which are after all are on the verge of a nervous breakdown ... which leads them to commit a murder . The reasons are plain to see and in a sense what disturbs me most is the triviality of the gesture, the word, or of the behavior that can end up in the worst possible way and when least expected. Makes you think. I do not like to dwell on, because my text itself is just as superfluous, given that this is the first movie that Rita Nunes wrote and directed I would say that the result is excellent and more words for what? Oh, almost forgot, what is the meaning of the title? If you cannot find out and really, but really, badly want to know, after reading this write me an email and I tell you. Good movie.

It is the debut of actress Maria de Medeiros and portrays the cry for freedom of Portugal.
It was perhaps one of the best moments of contemporary history and deserves an epic, nay, more than one, different visions, different filmmakers views of one moment that changed the life of the Portuguese people forever. It is curious that after this long film written and directed by Maria de Medeiros no one else dared to approach the April revolution. I proceed, however, with a theory on this matter. We lack a certain emotional distance from this striking chapter of national history, at least half a century, since one must not forget that when the first "captains of April" came out there was a strong wave of criticism and a certain coldness of the general public. One would expect people to hurry to the cinema to see the portrait of a time that although it was not literal, was remarkable. Wrong. The Portuguese do not like catharsis. Goes against their own nature, although it was a moment of freedom and collective joy, the truth is that the Portuguese felt over time somehow defrauded, the gains were temporary and April' revolution has a certain taste of disappointment and we have a certain shame to admit it. On the other hand, potentially the whole buzz around this film may have discouraged future film projects. Addressing the feature film itself, I must say I enjoyed the exteriors footage of the city of Lisbon, shows the true face of the revolution, the streets crowded with carnations. The work of the actors is another added value of this semi-biography, in particular the composition of Stefano Accorsi, as the hero of the revolution, Salgueiro Maia. What it cannot overcome it's the poor dubbing and sound. Not allowed. The script though, is interesting is deficient and that could explain the excessive prolongation of certain scenes, which is also the result of the inexperience of the director. But then again, it is not bad for a first approach. Good movie.
It's an intense work of filmmaker John Canijo accompanied by a range of great actresses
Blood of My Blood is a film of actress. It is script that was written thinking of them and they are what John Canijo films with a piercing precision. No major rodeos, without great characterizations, we see their faces almost naked of any makeup and facial expressions that tell the story of their desolate lives more or less predictable and hard, which leaves no room to dreams. Of that illusion nothing is left. It is the parade of life filled with daily routines, complicity, secrets and more or less hidden frustrations that lead to a final somewhat unpredictable. It is a hard film, which hurts us. Maybe because there are three actresses who stand for a truth showing it through their characters, I speak of Rita Blanco, Cleia Almeida and Anabela Moreira, mother, daughter and aunt respectively. All make great sacrifices for love. In different ways but no less valid or less noble. The performances of these great artists are magnificent and they fill the screen with such delivery. As for the director, I can say it was a bit baffling, but at the same time very original, some of the scenes in which the dialogues were taking place in unison, between mother and daughter and the aunt and nephew, was a little confused, yes, we want to hear everything, but the same time reinforced the idea of a dysfunctional family environment, where there are characters that are almost invisible as is the case of Yvette, the aunt, she even says it in one of the passages of the film. It is disturbing because it could happen either in a social housing , as in the Rome Avenue, the human tragedy has no class or color, or creed, it just happens, like life. Blood of my blood is above all a tribute to love, unconditionally, the motherly kind and I not speak only of biology. Good movie!
From the original script of António Pedro Vasconcelos and Joao R. Santos was one of the most watched films in Portugal.
When Antonio Pedro Vasconcelos began to outline the script of "call girl" only one name came to his mind for the role, Soraia Chaves. The actress here embodies one of the best female characters of Portuguese cinema. Was created to be wear to perfection, even better than a tailor. Soraia Chaves has a body of sin literally which has not too explored as in many Portuguese features. The nudity in some scenes exudes great erotic charge, which is greatly due to the excellent work of the actress and her inherent sensuality. The script is surgical, stripped of false modesty, that shows a society in decay, so naked and without false flourish and there are even memorable passages that I avoid mentioning, that the viewer will soon find out. Another aspect that I would focus on and that is rarely mentioned is the wardrobe in this film in particular, Soraia Chaves makes gala of the creations and choices of one of the best designers of our country, Filipe Faísca, the "enfant terrible" of national fashion, which again does not disappoint expectations with sumptuous garments that still give more credibility to this call girl. For those who have not had the pleasure of seeing this movie, I leave a small glimpse of this history of sex and money. Maria is the centerpiece in a game of seduction that involves the mayor of Vilanovas, played by Nicolau Breyner, into a dangerous web of corruption. Another highlight of this film are its secondary actors, of which I highlight again (I know, I never have enough!) the infallible Ivo Canelas in the role of the honest law enforcement and Joaquim de Almeida, who embodies the wolf in the skin of a real estate developer. Indulge on this "call girl" as did thousands of Portuguese who went to the movies, I suspect, to see the sculptural body of Soraia Chaves. Finally, another pearl, a cinematic curiosity, the main theme of the soundtrack is written by one of the sacred monsters of Portuguese music, Paulo Gonzo. Good movie!
It is the path of life of a former model / actress, Teresa Gaivão and the people intersect with her along the way.
This film by Alberto Seixas Santos failed its purpose completely. If the idea was to show the route of a former model that lives a down period of her careers, actress of soap operas, and the result was disappointing. The choice of Sofia Aparicio to embody the role of Teresa Galvao was an unhappy one. Is simply not enough to have a life course almost parallel and have a nice face to obtain a credible character. Her facial expression are all levels, almost always the same, I doubt whether this was due to botox, or just pure bad choice of the director. The last option seemed the most plausible, Sofia Aparicio has not the caliber, nor the talent necessary to build a character so complex as is tend it to be from what I gather from the script, a non-actress trapped in existential crossroad, confronted by the freshness of young talent at the professional level on one hand and on the other, the void that is her personal life. The background story, I would say secondary to the main plot, the studio recordings of the soap opera is much more interesting in terms of action and would have deserved a higher profile. The frugals performances of Rita Durao, Isabel Ruth and Americo Silva greatly contribute to keep our little interest in this feature film. The script of the film is its major weakness, the characters require a greater depth and the rest seems lost. There's even a scene that I want to highlight due to the lack of taste and appropriateness, the nakedness of the three young women. A futile exercise that I never get tired of stressing, since the Portuguese cinema seems to have a constant obsession to show the actresses bobbies, in this particular case the scene was not justified, the text fails on several fronts and this is one of them and once again I reinforce my opinion I am not against nudity in a film if there is a cohesion aesthetically and in terms of content. The only regret I have towards this "And time goes by," is that the title is the only thing appropriate for a story we want to pass by very quickly. Good movie!
