Santashorts'18

The SANTACURTAS'18 will be held, once again, in the House of Culture of Santa Cruz / Quinta do Revoredo, in Santa Cruz.

Our annual project was created in 2015 and presents itself as a distinctly contemporary reinterpretation of a Film Show, which took place in the 1990s in this same space. This new approach intends to implement a cinematic dynamic of continuity and appreciation of our cultural pole. We intend to provide the opportunity for a different movie experience, exchanging ideas and sensations, in our open-air auditorium, against the background of the sea and the Desertas Islands, listening to the sweet murmur of the waves in the rolled rock, at the same time as the farmer can contemplate the gardens of this old holiday farm.
The aim of the Film Festival is to present short films and documentaries that are outside the commercial circuit, alternative and author, contributing to the creation and training of new audiences and, at the same time, filling the lack of an alternative cinema that satisfies an audience more demanding.

It's already Friday! By 9:30 pm, we will have the Premiere of SANTAcurtas, with a special focus on Portuguese cinematography! Show up is free!

The Minister of Culture, Luís Castro Mendes, will deliver the Cultural Merit Medal to the Algarve writer Gastão Cruz next Saturday, August 4th, in an initiative integrated in the 3rd International Literary Festival of Querença (FLIQ)

Gastão Cruz is a notable author who has changed the face of contemporary Portuguese literature. Poet, literary critic, director and translator, linked to Poetry 61 and The Half-Day Notebooks and translations of Blake, Cocteau, and Shakespeare. Gastão Cruz received the D. Dinis Prize with Craters, in 2000, the Poetry Grand Prize of the Portuguese Writers Association with Rua de Portugal four years later and the Currents of Escrituras with A Coin of Time, in 2009.

In Querença, you will be among specialists, friends and interested in your vision of the world and of letters. In addition to an exhibition that will reflect his poetic and life trajectory, readings and a conference will be held, including names such as António Carlos Cortez and Fernando Martins. The writer Lídia Jorge will lead the conversation.

The International Literary Festival of Querença opens doors and windows to the dialogue between Literature and Illustration, theme of this 3rd edition. Between August 3rd and 5th, the Manuel Viegas Guerreiro Foundation fulfills the objectives that were the genesis of its creation, by the hand of Luís Guerreiro, "Engenheiro das Letras" and Patricia de Jesus Palma, historian of the book: to promote unrestricted the taste for reading and writing; strengthening a stimulating literary environment in the region, spreading "glocal" reflections.
Jorge Sampaio, Cécile Bertrand, Rayma Suprani, António Jorge Gonçalves, Eduardo Salavisa and Luís Vicente are some of the many names that make this year's FLIQ and that will mobilize dialogues around Literature and the Arts, translating social-political pressures and freedom of expression.

At the opening, FLIQ proposes Poesia do Mundo, spoken by young foreigners living in Loulé and from countries as diverse as Cape Verde, Dominican Republic, India, Venezuela and Nepal. Under the aegis of multiculturalism, they will read poets of the world.

The Africanist lens of the patron of the Foundation, the anthropologist, ethnographer and pedagogue Manuel Viegas Guerreiro, will continue this global look with the exhibition, in absolute debut, of slides captured in his expeditions in Africa. The session will be commented by the researcher of Prehistory Nuno Ferreira Bicho, director of the Interdisciplinary Center for Archeology and the Evolution of Human Behavior and professor at the University of Algarve since 1994. Complementarily will be made a trip through the caves of Solestreiras, Querença, visited in the century . XIX by a team of British researchers, through the work that has been carried out by the archaeologist Frederico Tátá Regala.

Still on the first day of the edition dedicated to Illustration, it gains a dimension with the mark of the Centenary of Birth of Tóssan, as Antonio Fernando dos Santos, illustrator, painter, decorator and graphic artist was known. The launch of a book, a conference and an exhibition will celebrate the artist with widespread work on national and foreign soil. The panel of speakers is moderated by Dália Paulo, an expert in museology and municipal director of the Loulé City Council.

Writer Nuno Júdice will join the panel Illustration and Visual Arts on Sunday, 5, alongside Mário Avelar and Carlos Martins Jesus, preceded by readings by Luís Vicente, artistic director of ACTA - The Algarve Theater Company. Also on Sunday, cartoonist Rayma Suprani, a Venezuelan exiled in Miami following threats from the Hugo Chávez administration, will focus on drawing and humor as ways to draw attention to freedom of expression in a solo performance. A conference will bring together the Belgian cartoonist Cécile Bertrand and the Portuguese Cristina Sampaio in illustration and Eduardo Salavisa, designer of everyday life.

Guilherme d'Oliveira Martins, CEO of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and a great interested in BD, will close FLIQ'18.
In all, the Querença International Literary Festival will host more than 40 invited participants over three days. They are writers, poets, essayists, researchers, teachers, screenwriters, illustrators, designers, performers, directors, actors, composers, musicians, songwriters of various nationalities who will bring "their world" to the village of Querença.

The FLIQ Book Fair, Africa and Querença slide show: Cultural Heritage, exhibitions, dialogues and poetry readings, illustration workshops, drawing and outdoor animation, and much more will be revealed by the program prepared for the first weekend of August.

La chete wins shorts of vila do conde

The 26th edition of Curtas Vila do Conde, the International Film Festival was announced this afternoon at the closing ceremony of the festival. The great prize of the contest was delivered to the French animation "La Chute", by Boris Labbé.

The jury, composed by Laurence Boyce (film critic and member of BAFTA, FIPRESCI and European Film Academy), Aurélie Chesné (programmer for France Télévisions) and Nadav Lapid (writer and director In Focus) considered the film "a pure cinema (...) as if there was nothing more than cinema "but" also an audiovisual essay on life and death ". The short film "La Chute" by Boris Labbé won the DCN Beers Grand Prix of the International Competition (which also competes with the National Competition films).
In the same competition, "Raymonde or l'évasion verticale", by Sarah van den Boom, was the winner of the prize for Best Animation; "Madness", by João Viana, was considered the Best Documentary; and Laura Moss's "Fry Day" was awarded the Best Fiction trophy. The Audience Award was awarded by the spectators to "Ce Magnifique Gâteau!" performed by Emma de Swaef and Marc James Roels.

The film was thus nominated for the European Film Academy's European Film Awards. Ana Moreira also won the Kino Sound Studio Award for Best Portuguese Director. In the words of the jury, the short film "combines the nostalgia of the past and the literal and figurative void of the present in a hypnotic and seductive work."
In the National Competition, which had 17 Portuguese films in competition, the winner of the Pixel Bunker Prize and Best Film in competition was "Where the Summer Goes (Episodes of the Youth)" by David Pinheiro Vicente, a film that, according to the jury, is "an exquisite work that combines the cinematic with beautiful pictorial pictures".

The Fabric Live Science Center (FLSC) celebrates on July 19th its 14th anniversary with the presence of Manuel Heitor, Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education.

On a joyful day and with a free program of activities open to the whole community, FLSC will also count on the presence of Paulo Jorge Ferreira, Rector of the University of Aveiro (UA), and Rosalia Vargas, president of the National Agency for Scientific and Technological Culture-Living Science.

As a result of a partnership between the UA and the Live Science Agency and installed in the former Aveirense Mill Plant with the great objective of spreading science and promoting scientific and technological culture, the Fabric has already received around half a million visitors over its 14 years of existence, thanks to a program that includes diversified activities, in different formats, allowing various levels of interaction with audiences of all ages.

Pedro Pombo, director of the FLSC, recalls that behind all the work carried out over the last 14 years "is a team of professionals of scientific dissemination and a wide group of researchers, fellows and teachers of the UA." "The involvement of the AU is a unique and valuable cinematic condition that guarantees the Factory rigor, innovation, quality, responsiveness, specificity, dynamics and diversity in all its contents, inside and outside the doors ".

Development of programs open to all who visit the Factory is only one of the three lines of action of the institution coordinated by Pedro Pombo. This "consists in the creation and development of contents or valences for the implementation and dynamization of the annual program of activities". As a second line of action, the provision of services and itinerant programs arises based on the commitment to take out of doors the contents that exist in the exhibition spaces of the Center.

"We believe that this way it is possible to involve more public in science, which for various reasons may not have the availability, access or resources to go to the Live Science Center of Aveiro. This component also promotes the development and dynamization of annual educational projects", explains Pedro Pombo.

As a third line of action comes the "development and marketing of products". This was created taking into consideration that the Live Science Center of Aveiro is an integrated structure in the AU, a situation that for Pedro Pombo "allows the accomplishment of a collaborative work between the Plant and the various Units of the UA, in order to create value added with technical and scientific potential and thus leverage a unit dedicated to the production and commercialization of science communication products".

Nocturnus de edgar allan poe

The Instantaneous try again to surprise and dare us with their new show Nocturnus. An original creation that intends to explore and to merge in the literary universe of Edgar Allan Poe, with the esoteric scenery of the Quinta da Regaleira from July 20th to August 18th, every Friday and Saturday at 11:59 pm.

A fun poetic incursion into the romantic environments of his literary work, which will inspire the creation of fantastic tales, completely improvised and ephemeral as the night. This show is co-produced with CulturSintra Foundation.

"All that we see or seem, is nothing more than a dream within a dream." Edgar Allan Poe.

The last days of Edgar Allan Poe's life are shrouded in mystery. After disappearing, in circumstances yet to be explained, Poe is found wandering in the street, completely out of his mind and in shock. The hours before his death were spent in mental delirium and deep madness. Even today, answers are sought about where he will have been and what he will have seen during his enigmatic absence. Nocturnus, proposes to take the audience on a dream trip, to the dark universe of the American writer and through his own eyes, finally unveil this secret. Could Poe get lost in the dark? Or was it the darkness that got lost in Poe?

Riot launches a new set

A trip without limits, designed for a wide audience with different musical tastes by the DJ set of RIOT.

RIOT's music is always an exploratory journey through the latest urban sounds, but always with a very strong foundation. Based on what together with Branko, Kalaf, Conductor and Blaya, he created, the so-called Lisbon sound with clear influences in the Portuguese diaspora from where the Buraka Som Sistema came about.
From Afro-house to Hip Hop, from Kuduro to Drum'n'Bass, as long as it makes sense, you're sure to be on a RIOT set.
With a clear concern to spread what is best in music in Portugal, the set contains many remixes, exclusive bootlegs made by himself and even some originals ranging from versions of Buraka, Carlão, Slow J, MGDRV, among others.
