The shearwater laugh

This migratory bird was chosen to be the bird of the year 2011 by PSSB, a distinction that is an alert to the drastic decrease of this specimen on the planet.

The shearwater can be recognized by its brown back, white belly and yellow beak, but what truly distinguishes it from other birds is the call that seems the raucous laughter of a hyena that swallowed a mixing console is the best way I have to describe the sound they reproduced. It sounds fun but it is not. Just listening to it and the perception is different, since in no way resembles the triple of a bird. If you doubt my word, just listen to his "calling" and assess for yourselves through the link of the Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds, which is at the end of this text. Continuing.

This bird travels long distances, to the point of spending most of his life flying over the oceans of temperate and cold water. The only period of your existence when in fact they spend more time on land is when they decide to nest. Every year the shearwaters choose the same partner and lay eggs on the same island or rock where they reproduced the first time, which creates a large concentration of these migratory birds. Now, imagine hundreds of them "screaming" at the same time.
The Portuguese territory is one of his favorite places for this purpose, inter alia, on the Deserted Islands located in the Madeira Archipelago, Berlengas and in large numbers in the Azores. These migratory birds arrive to the places of posture during the month of March where they build their nests in a kind of den that is visited by parents only during the night. Then, the offspring are born in May and leave the nest in October, its animal instinct dictates this march for the high seas.
The distinction of the Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds came in as an alert to the dramatic decrease of the specimen, due to human interference and increasing pollution of the oceans, as these birds feed exclusively on fish and cephalopods.

Weight & Mesurement

Fashion dictates perfect measures for women. A prototype of silhouette unreachable for the vast majority who views the curves as targets to be killed and helped to spread the frustration and low self-steem of women.

How many of us have entered a store to try a garment and in most cases there is not even our number? Where can you find jeans that fit, or rather "the jeans" that just look great, not to tight in the hip, too loose on the waist, or to baggy, or worse a trousers with no curves ? Because once you've experienced more than ten pairs and afeter many hours of frustration, what do we decided? we buy the least bad choise. Not to mention that the boots for most ordinary mortals with biceps more prominent in the legs, are definitely out of question, and I'm not just talking about leather boots, clogs, wich are very trendy this year, lack of legroom also. So what kind of world is this that finds it acceptable to wear the number 34? It is the tyranny of fashion designers, textile industry itself and the hordes of women who follow them unconscious without considering the consequences. True, textile industrie also has a lot of guilt. And I will explain.
Have you ever wonder why there are no boots for all legs, and don't you dare to use the excuse of being fat, because the main gold for factories is to produce more with fewer raw materials as possible. Follow the reasoning, the leather that is used in the footwear industry is valuable because it is expensive and for such must be well spent. To reach consumers, there are various stages of production that has to be as efficient as possible in terms of cost. And in this case the use of material is enhanced to the maximum, so from a bit of leather must be cut several strips of the famous boots that you love. However, to avail the most possible it is necessary to take into account the sizes and this is the crux of the matter, the larger the diameter occupied by the leg, the higher cost of final production. That isto say, the larger the area, fewer strips you can cut from a single piece of leather, and that means more yarn it takes to saw them longer soles must be applied and if a worker sews on average, a a mare supposition, lest say 15 boots size 35 in one hour, will do less if they are size 42, because there is more to sew in the same amount of time. You see?
The same happens with textiles why are so many small sizes on the market? Because of a single strip of fabric are cut several pieces of size 12, and with the same meters of cloth can be cut fewer size 18. The businessman inhaces his product because they do more of less and with greater profit. The so-called standard sizes. The irony is that the fabrics are cheaper now because they are produced in China. Curious, isn't? But the final price is the same. And we consumers were are we? On constant diets that leave us frustrated constantly. I am not difending obesity, but we can be healthy without looking like sticks. I'm talking about women with different body types that are not appropriate closes to their type of physical structure. An example? The so-called pear shape, and are a large majority in Portugal, they have shoulders, breast and narrow waist, but wide hips and legs.

The world's mishievious animal

We can see it with some frequency in the urban jungle that is their natural environment. At first it may seem very friendly, but be careful when you least expect it "attacks" its prey.

This is an animal of average height, according to some is endemic in Brazil, specifically to cities such as Rio de Janeiro and Brasilia, but we can find it in South America and all over the world. It is a parasite, that lives at the expense of others. It feeds on anything, good and even the crap depending on the environment where it belongs, therefore, they are the living beings most well adapted to the ecosystem. It is considered a mutant animal due to this unique feature, which allows our maliciousus malandrus (scientific name) survive and proliferate on a large scale, resorting to tricks and schemes that guarantee their existence. It can be seen in flocks in very poor areas or even in very chic enviroments, with an emphasis on public buildings specially in the capital of the Brazilian nation. Normally migrates to areas that are good sources of food and then, you notes the success by the size of their belly, the slowness in which they move and their cynical laughter that reminds you a lot of hyenas. And like them, some specimens have scavengers habits, sucking everything down to the marrow. In case of danger they are able to hide and blend in among the other living beings without being noticed. It also can run with great speed to the point that even the police can stop them, in a juvenile state, of course. In more mature stages of escape is done by other means of transportation to tax havens. Procreation is another of its strengths. They have flashy garments, flaunt is often with great relaxation towards females, without ever giving the impression that they are truly interested. His chin and cunning are refined and although is not the most scholarly can convince them because they have other attributes beyond the physical. It is believed that the malaciousus malandrus propagate some of the worst diseases inflicted on humans, massive loss of neurons, lack of moral and ethical behaviour, laxity, corruption and personality disorders. It is believed that the genesis of this subspecies have been a certain individuals in southern Europe which were mixed with blacks after the arrival in Brazil, but this hipotesis is a mere speculation without any scientific basis. The scoundrels, his most common name, is the major pest known to man, but considered a hero by many Brazilians in his country of origin.

Fashion arrived to Lisbon

For 20 years the brand ModaLisboa is in the city's cultural agenda and launches fashion trends in Portugal.

When the Lisbon Fashion Week opened the doors in the Rivoli Theater in 1991, was an unprecedented media event , becouse for the first time the best of Portuguese style stomp the catwalk. The event was the invitation of the department of tourism of the Municipality of Lisbon, to Eduarda Abbondanza and Jose Matos Ribeiro who were in charge of the organization of the event, and in its first edition was a resounding success. Since then the MLx imprints national trends through the collection of Portuguese designers.
During its history, one of the highlights of this innovative and fashion shows, was the launch of the New Blood competition, which over the years has made room for the emergence of young designers such as Maria Gambina, Osvaldo Martinez, Miguel Flor and Torres Lara, just to name a few.
The Lisbon fashion over time has tried to be a window to the Portuguese designers and has not been without some controversy in the middle. In 1993, after six editions, was halted to reorganize their structures. John Galliano, even before being appointed chief designer at Dior, was invited to participate in one of the issues, not without first having been the subject of a heated debate, by being a foreigner creator to participate in an event for national fashion designers.
After these setbacks along the way, the MLx continued to make a difference by creating a parallel dynamic to the fashion show. Workshops are promoted not only for professionals but also for national and foreign press which are basically the largest vehicles for the promotion and internationalization of Portuguese brands, which are aimed at building bridges between de designers and entrepreneurs in the sector.
After 10 years of existence, the organization in the forefront of events opens a store, the ModaLisboa Design in the centers of the city where the public can see and buy the closes of portuguese designers. In 2003, they decided to create a fashion week, which lasts four days and is not just limited to clothing but also other concepts of author, interior design and visual artists.
The Showroom Fashion & Must Haves has been one of the last betting by the group ModaLx, which is as the name suggests, and I quote, "a showroom business dedicated to national and international buyers, national and foreign press and opinion leaders in an attempt to consolidate the collections presented in a procession with the follow-up that should be provided post-event. " So, after nearly 20 years of existence the MLx is not a simple fashion event in our country, is a reference for generations of Portuguese.

My closet

the closes as humans evolved. In our days is a code for the new tribes

Since the dawn of humanity, that human beings feel the need to cover their bodies, for reasons not worth being in discuss, and cleverly used the necessity to distinguish himself even among his peers. And at this point still do not talk about fashion, but in status. Primitive man tried to show their skills through the alpha male clothing, let's say that it was a nonverbal code of the success of a certain member of the species in an era in which the speech was not develop. Remember that the cavemen wore fur, the best hunter was the one who hunted bears or cats. And the success of their breeding depended on that ability to show off.
Over the centuries, humanity was divided by social backgrounds that are differentiated by their wealth of fabrics and jewelry, on the opposed plan were the poor with their raw clothing. Marco Polo, Vasco da Gama and Christopher Columbus are among those adventurers who brought with them, the wonders of other worlds, which were used as trophies by the powerful to strengthen its political capital and economic power. Who has not seen pictures and portraits of famous kings and queens adorned with gold and precious stones and intricate embroidery with luxurious silks?
In the twentieth century, the clothing is beginning to gain the importance that we know and then yes we can talk about fashion. In this field, women have a say. That they have always encouraged the trade, indirectly, by the need to gain access to tissues, the materials that distinguish one from the others. There was also already at that time, the urgency of creating a dress code that was reserved only for a chosen few, the rich, the elites. Then comes the middle class with a dress that reflects your success. Recall the 80's, the yuppies? The boys of the scholarship, with his shoulder pads, his Armani suits and Ferraris? Who better than them to a picture of a successful decade of prosperous and rich, a youth who won not by manual labor, but by their wits and intelligence.
And then we landed on the twenty-first century, will it be as in the past, we can evaluate the success, the status of someone by the clothes they wear? I think not. Think, if in the past, the clothes were a form of nonverbal acceded to a series of information about a particular individual, at present this boundary is very diffuse. So let's see, looking at the picture of Steve Jobs, a founding partner of Apple, he was the boss of the decade by Fortune magazine, by only looking at his black turtleneck, his jeans and tennis can we honestly say :This is one of the most influential men on the planet? Of course not.

Fatal love

The giant octopus of the Pacific is the irrational living being more motherly of the planet. An invertebrate that does not look at ways to ensure the survival of their eggs

It is considered the most maternal species of the animal kingdom. It seems surprising given that it is a mollusk, but true. The giant Pacific octopus is named for the size that can reach adulthood, about nine feet long, came to weigh 250 kg. It is a weighing animal no doubt, but with an average of life that covers only two years. They are animals that inhabit the seafloor, have already been sighted about 70 meters deep. The giant octopus are deaf, like all cephalopods, but have a pair of eyes with about 50 000 receptors per square millimeter of light that allow them to see with great clarity even greater obscurity. The tips of the eight tentacles act like noses and as such that they can sense through the water hormonal changes, just imagine small specialized cells in odors, therefore able to detect aggressive behavior and act accordingly. Unlike the legend they do not attack humans, but in case of threat cast a dark and viscous liquid and fleeing at breakneck speed due to their aerodynamic bodies. Its main weapon of defense is a behavior called mimicry, ie, they change color in less than thirty seconds, mingling with their environment. If none of these evasiv moves have na effect, they do not hesitate to attack even when it comes to therms with natural predators such as the shark and they do not mind if in the confrontation lose one or more tentacles, because they eventually grow back. They are intelligent, but not to the point of guessing the outcome of football championships.
Apart from its scale and capabilities with which nature endowed them, which draws the attention of scientists around the world is his fatal denial when it comes to procreation. These invertebrates when they decide to mate, fail to eat literally. It's a very dramatic act of love that results in immediate death of the male after a certain period of time without food. The female is the part that concerns us in this account, she watches the eggs in a cave where they gather covering the entrance with rocks to prevent the entry of potential predators. During the six months that follows the period of incubation, the octopus does not feed, ruthlessly guarding their precious offspring at the same time that oxygenates the eggs to prevent any diseases or other hazards from aggressors seafloor. She watches the little ones until exhaustion, to the point of that her last maternalo gesture, if you can call it that, it blows water to trigger egg hatching. It's her last blow before dying, but at the same time is a breath of life. Greater proof of love that does not exist, the explanation? Scientists are still debating this issue. Makes you think, doesn't?

Sex and shoes

The footwear reflects the evolution of man, but more than that is an icon for women.

The history of the shoe began 10,000 years ago when the man felt the need to walk upright and to roam the planet. And because of this merely physical urgency, becau as you know it hurts like hell to walk barefoot, it was necessary to create an efficient protection to the feet to walk long distances comfortably and that would maintain body temperature! The first shoes were made with the skin of the animals they hunted.
In ancient times however, in addition to its protective function, the shoe got another dimension that was to be a reflection of social status. The Egyptians, for example, only allowed the use of sandals for the nobility and the Pharaoh could only use straps made of gold. The Romans distinguished different political echelons by the color of sandals, white for consuls and senators were brown with four black stripes. The Greeks were again the ones who created the fashion for shoes. Ever heard the expression in sound body as in mind, as it was, the beauty had a very important role in the more developed society of its era, the Greeks wore sandals in various colors, only for the sensory pleasure of looking at something beautiful that was only made for walking.
In the middle ages, the shape of the shoe got its sexual connotation, the toes more precisely, the greater the size, the higher the male sexual organ, a privilege that of course was accessible only to Kings. It was not yet an evolution without foundation, in an age devasteded by the balck plague, it was necessary to ensure fertility, or at least ostensibly shows it to society. But there was also a downside, in Italy, the Venetian women wore clogs very high and very elaborate, which prevented them from walking the streets alone, since they need support they never went to the streets alone and this was a disguised form of husbands watch over their wives. In the East, as you know for centuries, the Chinese girls of tender age were obliged to bandage their feet, a painful process that accompanied them throughout their lives, to prevent the feet from growing. An atrocious behavior, which was accepted in the society of the time as aesthetic, but deep down only aimed to confine women to the home space.

The journey of the swallow

They are small birds that visit Portugal every year and bring with them the harbinger of spring

Swallows are birds that despite its small size every year make a journey of a thousand miles to our country for nesting. Every year, following an instinct that is inherent in flying them from North Africa to our country and staying until the end of summer this small flying animal is loved by the Portuguese because they are the prelude of spring and good weather. "Hence his great strength and ability to orient, the swallow is a bird that displays great agility while flying, allowing you to do flybys with no danger to their physical integrity. During the time they visit us, this nice bird makes its nest, or rebuild the old, the site where theirself was born. If this space is occupied, then, yes, look for another place, not far from the original nest. The nests are made of straw and mud. The swallow will transporting these materials in its beak, to feel their nest is perfect and strong enough to accommodate a new generation of birds to their offspring. "
Birds are associated not only to the good weather, but also to home. Due to his selfless ability to create its offspring, the Portuguese think this bird is the perfect example all the best that nature can bring. It is no coincidence that one of the most sold Bordallo Pinheiro pottery is a family of swallows that normally is offered to couples in their marriage. The passion of the portuguese is such that replicas of flocks of swallows hang on the walls of homes as a sign of prosperity. Must be one of the most prized birds in our country. And to reinforce the idea I quote some of their the scientific characteristics, "Females do a posture of 4 or 5 eggs, which are then incubated for about 14 to 16 days. After the incubation time, the young are born, whose diet is made by both parents. With the arrival of autumn, when the temperature starts to drop, the swallows gather in large flocks and then fly south in search of higher temperatures on the African continent. Some fly to Western Europe to South Africa to return the following spring. "

The portugues Indian

He recently launched his first work that is already a success in our country. A serious case of fame in the music scene.

Alberto Indian is "the next big thing" in the recent music scene, but it is not no beginner when it comes to music. Very early this young singer-songwriter work his way up in small steps to his recognition as an artist. Many already know him from the time he sang in the circuits of the bars from the metropolitan area of OPorto. He was known then by the name indian, nickname and well kept in fact, because at the time he had long hair and as you can see in the picture he is very fair, which indeed gave him and gives a certain Indian look. Since its beginning stage, he sang his own theme which was added one by one to his repertoire. His musical success is also due to the public, but mainly young people, female audience, who is always been following his career in the bars of Porto, where he played. New technologies have made the consecration and the rest came with the theme "could be you" that was part of the soundtrack of the soap opera "Sea of Passion" of TVI, a passionate melody that captivated thousands of Portuguese who followed the story of the fishermen. Now with one album out, we can expect much of this young Portuguese singer. Just listen to "sincerely" , the theme that launches this new work, after listening we're sure that this Indian came to stay. The video also in my opinion it should be pointed out, its an excellent audivisualy promotion of this musician. For anyone who has doubts the clip was filmed in downtown Coimbra, and whether the choice of site, whether the concept of choreography of this video clips was excelent. The Alberto Indian has already put available to fans and other Internet users the new theme "magic", a song very well done, in my view, because it has a very suggestive lyric, with a strong romantic nature which incidentally is one of the personal stamp of this singer and that always delights the female audience! Music that he defines itself as "do clearly indicate the expression, feeling and dedication to my music." Hopefully for years!

The oldest tree of Portugal

This is a specimen that resists weather and environmental upheavals in our country for over two centuries. An example of maturity in the vegetal world.

An olive tree with permanent residence in Tavira is the oldest tree in Portugal. An official recognition of the National Forest Authority (NFA), after being taken into account a number of historical and cultural factors as well as other more scientific in nature, namely, longevity, size and design. The fact is that this specimen in the list of 409 trees with public interest, and it took five men to embrace his trunk. The estimated age of this species is a genuine prodigy, according to the estimate of the technicians, the olive tree is in our territory for over 2000 years. Remarkable, is not it? Now imagine, this tree has seen the formation of our country, the wars of independence and all political and social upheavals that followed.
The olive trees are in fact extraordinary not only for its longevity, but for all that it gives to man in exchange for light and water. With their fruit we make the olive oil, essential to our diet. Under their branches, heading towards south, we can always find an Alentejano enjoing their shade for daytime nap. Without forgetting the other species of animals that take shelter and use the torso to build nests. There is thus no coincidence that their branches are a symbol of peace. These trees have always been present in all the great events of mankind, accompanying us through the centuries. A great deed for this vegetal species. Which leave us room for thought. After all we are very ephemeral, we the human race, we do not own the planet, or more or less. Our species may even disappear entirely, but the olive tree resists and stays.
Another of trees that deserve the epithet of being the oldest in our country, is the second record of the AFN, a chestnut located in the Lady of Remedios, Lamego. Despite having only the trunk, since the canopy is a vine that covers the top, it is estimated that this specimen plant has some 737 years. Not bad for an old man that despite the old age is yet ready for a few rounds more!
